Educational Offerings of the Diaconate Institute

The Josephinum Diaconate Institute’s academic offerings primarily focus on diaconal formation and pastoral ministry. All coursework conforms to The National Directory for the Formation, Ministry, and Life of Permanent Deacons in the United States of America, 2nd ed.

The Institute offers a comprehensive pre-ordination curriculum in both English and Spanish which can be tailored to meet the needs of individuals or dioceses. Courses in the catalog are generally 2 credit hours. For those who wish to pursue an advanced degree, most courses can be taken at an advanced level and applied towards a Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies.

Course Format

Courses are offered in three 12-week semesters annually using an online distance learning format. Classes combine online on-demand videos, reading, papers, and other learning tools, as well as live weekly video sessions offered over the internet. Instruction is delivered using a state-of-the-art Learning Management System, allowing students to collaborate with one another and the instructor, submit assignments, receive feedback, and assess learning outcomes.
